At Radical Hair Design, we can help you achieve healthy, luscious locks with our skilled hair stylists. A common question posed to hairdressers is: Can you heal split ends? In today’s blog, we are going to bring you the truth on this pertinent question – and suggest what you can do to keep your hair free of split ends.
A split end is when a piece of hair splits into two or more – typically occurring at the end of a hair, though, despite the name, it can occur further up the hair. Split ends typically have a jagged appearance. Those with long hair are likely familiar with the scourge of split ends – the reason why you must trim your tresses on a regular basis. Typically, split ends form gradually over time. If you have recently subjected your hair to a harsh chemical process, you may have noticed endless split ends appearing seemingly overnight. A cure to split ends would be as valuable as a cure for the common cold – and, unfortunately for you, it proves just as elusive.
The honest truth is that you cannot heal an end that has already split. There is no product you can buy which will permanent stick the split back together and restore your once-healthy hair. Anyone who tells you otherwise is peddling snake oil. The closest thing to a cure is a pair of scissors. If your hair is in poor condition, we would always recommend a trim or cut to try to remove some of the damaged ends.
What you can do is undertake preventative measures so you do not have unmanageable split ends in the first place. Think about the processes which you subject your hair to. If you are a fiend for the curling or straightening iron, or if you are blow drying your hair every morning, you may want to revise your habits for the sake of preserving your hair’s health. When you must apply heat, ensure you use a heat protectant spray or serum which will prevent you from frying your hair.
Dye, especially bleach, is also a leading cause of split ends. We are not going to be the ones to tell you not to dye your hair – having a colour you love can be a real mood-booster. However, be responsible about your hair dyeing. At-home colour is never a good idea, and it costs more to fix a shoddy at-home dye job than to go to the salon in the first place. Book yourself in at Radical Hair Design in Sydney and we will get you the hair colour you want without inflicting unimaginable damage to your hair.
It is a good idea to use quality conditioning treatments on your hair at home – this keeps your hair from drying out, which makes it more prone to split ends. Keep in mind that there are different hair types and textures – ask us which product would be best for you when you come in to the salon. We are happy to make a recommendation on what would be most effective for your hair type.
